Sudden Death Records and Mind Over Management have re-released this important Vancouver punk rock comp for a new generation to enjoy, and us old punkers to remember. If you don't know the history, even Canada had a vibrant scene back in the late 70s with bands such as DOA, The Shades, The Dishrags and the Pointed Sticks. The latter became the first punk band to be signed to a label outside of Canada, an amazing accomplishment when trying to compete with the Clash, Ramones and many others. So the disc is pretty much a time warp back to the time when punk was pure. Nothing here is watered down or cleaned up to be radio friendly, its classic sounds by classic bands that helped shape their regional punk scene. The disc has twenty-six tracks on it, how they could all fit on the original vinyl album I have no idea, but every track is an absolute treasure. From DOA's "Kill, Kill This Is Pop" and Active Dog's organ-fused punk po twist "Fun While It Lasts" to the Shades' two minute long "New Clientelle" and the all-girl outfit The Dishrags' "Bullshit", you get a complete synopsis of the attitude, talent and influence of the Vancouver area bands. This is a great album for those of you who enjoy the true punk rock sounds of the late seventies.... You know prior to pop, power, hardcore, and the rest. You can't beat this disc, where else can you find an entire city's golden years on one album? You won't find LA's or NYC's or London's history in one spot, you'll be collecting albums until you die. Get out and find this disc for a great history lesson and the entertainment value of true punk rock in its prime! -MG |
