Shite N Onions, Volume 2: What The Shite (released 2006)
Omnium - www.omnium.com
They've done it again! The folks over at Omnium have compiled anonther fantastic compilation of today's best Irish folk come punk rock bands on the planet! From Austalia to Germany, Canada to England and all across the USA, the sounds of traditional Irish rock has hit it's stride, and no other compilation makes that more evident than Shite 'N' Onions, Volume 2. The killer part of the disc is that while there is plenty of Irish sound to go around, a good portion of the bands and tracks on this disc are more poppy, more oi!, more non-traditional, in a sense that you could easily mistake some of the tracks for straight up pop punk rock that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the Irish punk invasion. Of course there are several traditional arrangements of classic Irish songs, like "Drunken Sailor" by The Blaggards, Three Day Threshold's "Pub With No Beer", "My Brother Sylveste" by The Pubcrawlers, and The Porter's "Weila Weila"... But there's more in the sounds of The Go Set's "Sing Me A Song", which has the Australian five-piece singing about revolution, The Kissers "Kicked In The Head", which I am still trying to decipher as a religious song or something totally different, and the Icewagonflu's "Trinity", that comes across as a very hip sound of post-punk and Irish rock...it's different a bit, but still very good. Shite 'N' Onions, Volume 2 offers many variations on the genre that weren't so evident on the previous volume. In fact, the previous volume from Omnium featured what I would describe as 95% traditional music that made you want to dance, this disc features traks with about 50% of traditional sounds that make you want to shout and stomp about! Shite 'N' Onions, Volume 2 is without a doubt the more punkier release between the two volumes, I like both, but this new release will satisfy many punk that liek to dip into the well that is Flogging Molly, The Pogues and The Tossers. Don't miss out on this twenty track comp that simply will leave you with a smile on your face, and your finger poised on the repeat button! -MG |
