Up All Night With... The White Barons (released 2007)
Gearhead Records - www.gearheadrecords.com
Featuring the famous burlesque performer, The Baroness Eva von Slut, at the front of the line belting out some stunning vokills. The White Barons play a loud, aggressive infectious street punk rock mixed with hints of greaser and horror rock. The White Barons, are yet another outlet for it's lead singer, as she also sings for Thee Merry Widows, an all female rockabilly group that we don't hear enough from. The White Barons also feature another well established member of the current punk patheon, Adam Goldstein of the now defunct Time In Malta (Equal Vision Records). I really like what I'm hearing here...no holds barred rock n roll right out of the Bay Area. Figures, some of the best dirty rock comes from the northern part of California and Gearhead Records knows how to take advantage of the plethora of talent and pluck the best the area has to offer. One point I'd like to make, and I know this is going to go over like a ton of bricks, but I have to say it. The first time I heard Eva's voice it reminded me of the good ole days of No Doubt. Back when Gwen Stefani could transform her voice between the high pitched yelps and a ultra cool, deeply sexual gutteral moans; Eva is capable of the same thing, albeit with more anger, authority and potentcy. When I think of strong female fronted outfit, No Doubt certainly comes to mind, and for good reason, the singer is a performer, one who exudes the passion built within the song. Eva does the same thing with The White Barons. It's all too apparent, that without Eva at the front, The White Barons may be another street punk band. With Eva, the band becomes something else...a hauntingly powerful group with a stunning front woman capable of more range than any man could hope. The eleven track album is a fast paced materpiece that is great for flying down the freeway, shouting out with your friends, or just kicking back and letting it play on the jukebox while you pound some brews. Yeah, maybe that's how this release fits in best: hard drinking rock n roll. Eva voice sounds like she's been downing the whiskey for years, the burned out throaty, smokers throat. Deep, belty and raspy...but with an loud authority as strong as the guitars on this album. That's another part of this album that just rocks it... The guitars are somewhere between greaser rock n roll and hardcore punk rock. As it dances across this album, the guitars are just plain ripping! Great stuff! All in all, this is a really great album, with plenty of rock n roll to go around, solid craftmanship of each and every track, and best of all Eva's wicked vokill approach! Fans of bluesy punk n roll will not want to miss The White Barons. -MG |
