The art noise rock duo from the upper portion of the Netherlands are unique, in that there are just the two of them in the group, but also because they are two women. I don't think that's the best way to open this review, but I suppose I should put it out there, mainly because the energy found on this album is outrageous! I mean these two women just belt it out and have a great time doing it! With a drum machine, one of them each on guitar and bass, and the impeccable vocal styles of Jess, the Suicidal Birds are a dynamic couple that will knock you off your seat from the first track through the last. This album features thirteen tracks of their relentless assault upon your rock sensibilites. Crushing guitars and a throbbing bass line can be found on each and every track, the band rarely slows down on this album (see "No Way", "No Light" and "Vegi Garden Song" for some slow jams). Otherwise the band makes every effort to roll up all types of influences and different flavors of rock into their music. You get shots of pop, electronic, rock, punk and indie, all neatly combined and packaged into a great thirteen song set. Probably my favorite track on the disc is the opener, "No Nada". As far as I can tell, the lyrics are non-sensical, the music is loud, obnoxious and irreverant. To me it sounds like the girls are having the time of their lives on this track. Exactly what I look for in a great rockin' tune! Fans of one man band Man and aggressively fuzzed out garage noise rock will really dig this whole album. -MG |
