Yellow Fever Blues (released 2006)
Gearhead Records - www.gearheadrecords.com
Belting out some of the most aggressive and loud music from a three-piece unit I have heard in a very long time, The Spunks present a stellar album full of rowdy rock n roll. Working with iconic producer Don Fury on this album, and being signed with Gearhead Records, The Spunks have got a lot working for them...as well as being able to craft some of the best punk rock around. Based out of New York, the band is a tightly would trio, hailing predominantly from Japan...predominantly, because it two of the three members are clearly Japanese. I think that alone adds to the allure of the band, because Japanese punk rock, while not well travelled or accepted in many mainstream punk circles, is clearly some of the best in the world. The Spunks add to that through their exception power and fury! The tracks are either in Japanese or English, but more often than not you can't understand a single word their shouting, so language really doesn't matter. What matters is that the band is fast, loud and aggressive...and pretty much straight to the point in all of their songs. Throughout the disc, there are stand out and favorite tracks, including "#1", the chorus of we're number one rings through my head even after I remove the disc from the player. Another stunner is "Dog Days", with the screaming and urgency delivered throughout the track. They even manage an incredible version of Gitogito Hustler's "Love & Egg Roll"...incredible. The Spunks got a ton of rave reviews about their previous effort, "Russian Roulette" and it certainly goes to show on this album, that those reviews was not unfounded, and that the band can deliver yet again with an album of great power and entertainment. Fans of crunchy, potent hard punk n roll should not miss this release, in fact, it should be mandatory for any one who digs late the 70s and early 80s hardcore punk meets garage rock ferocity. Don't miss out, cause these guys are bound to be claimed by the masses as their own, and you'll want to hear their raw energy, before some major label steals away their intoxicating intensity. -MG
