Street Rock Stars (released 2006)

The Spinoffs play what I thought was going to be street punk rock, as stated by the title of the album, but as it turns out they play pop punk rock in the vein of Screeching Wesel, Blink 182 and Green Day. A lot of west coast punk rock sound to this disc, and that's great if that's what you're into...but I wanted some street punk dammit. Well for what I got, I like! It's upbeat, fast-paced punk rock that moves you quickly and will have your head bobbing and your friends pogoing! "Street Rock Stars" features sixteen tracks of bouncy punk rock anthems, but strangely all delivered to you in a tight package of just over twenty-three minutes. Strange cause I'm used to three minute, chorus chanting, three chord funny rock n roll, but The Spinoffs can do that in about a minute, as evidenced by all but a handful of tracks on here. all in all though, I really like the disc, it's upbeat enough to keep my head and ass moving, not overly pop to where it's sickly sweet, all the while still maintaining a punk rock, garagey edge to it, of course to keep street cred! I think just about anyone who is a fan of early Green Day, early Blink and Screeching Weasel will really dig The Spinoffs and the album that they've put together. As an adder to this, I read over the liner notes and found this album to have been recorded in two distinctly different time periods. Now I'm wondering if this is a highlight reel for the band, as both the drummer and guitarist from the first session are now gone. To be honest, between the tracks listed as a four piece and the other as a three piece, you can notice no difference. The band has managed to carry on their sound just fine, in this reviewers opinion. The suggestion to all of you skater pop punks out there, this is a great album to rock out to, even if it is just a hair over twenty minutes long...about as long as a good session on the half! -MG
