What we have here is a two disc set from the almighty Australian band The Orphans. Chronicaling the entire life of the band, the disc features thirty-eight tracks, many of which are from live sets. The recordings sound very much like the originals, in that it is grainy and rough. Perhaps the band and label desires it thisway, or maybe the band truely sounds best with the retro sound. Either way, this album is pretty good. The band plays your typical late seventies punk rock, kinda like Television with the guitar mixes coming in heavy when asked, the vocls are straight forward and understandable, not a Sex Pistols sneer anywhere... The band covers ome old tunes from the proto punk era, Iggy and The Stooges' "Search And Destroy" is classic track. But the band does offer their own variety of punk music that is really good. Tracks like "Heard It On The Radio" and "Sweet Suicide" stand out as stellar tracks among the rest that are, as said before, standard late seveties styled punk. On occassion the band manages a good pop rock song, whether intended back then or not, these tracks make the band enjoyable and offers them a chance to sound more attractive to the casual listener. I like what the band/label has decided to do with this album by offering two disc of the complete recordings, including live tracks, because you get the full view of what the band managed in their time. So in review, two discs, thirty-eight tracks, nineteen live, two covers, all rock and roll punk rock from one of the better Autralian punk rock bands of thirty years ago! -MG |
