The Lost... (released 2007)
Self Produced
Massachusetts based punk rock DIYers The Numbskulls have released their second of three planned volumes. Each of these special releases will/have featured five tracks from the band, detailing in their words, "The Numbskulls musical evolution". I can dig it. With the digital music age upon us, you've got to have gimmick or a way for people to want your music. Making it hard to get or as a special edition or released over time, only helps to substantiate the desire of your fan base. Keep 'em beggin'! This release again features five tracks, all brand new from The Numbskulls...and well I think I just said that, when I mentioned the exclusive serial release. Anyway... The band is evolving! For the better, that's a matter of choice. I am a little indifferent. I really dig the band's chaotic early material, whereas this disc is well polished and the production level is incredible for a DIY release. The band is also writing material that is more...friendly? Maybe that's not what the band was aiming for. I think they really want to be known as still having a high energy delivery, with scathing vocals, ripping guitars and a pulsing rhythm section. They do achieve all of that on this release, but the songs are just...more approachable? I think I'd just chalk it up to the great production: clear vocals, strong drum beats, and guitars that just fly off of the disc. You cannot deny the potency of The Numbskulls and their brialliant ability to craft a high energy track, and deliver it with doubly the amount of juice they used to develop the tune. Simply put, this five-some presents an unsympathetic view towards you, delivering a solid set of tunes that certainly will not disappoint. Fans of real, raw punk n roll will become, in short order, one of the masses awaiting the finale in the trilogy of The Numbskull's exclusive releases. -MG
