The Last..., Volume 1 (released 2005)
Self Produced
This is the first volume of a three disc set to be released by the band, showcasing their growth over their short career. Pretty ambitious, but a really cool idea. It's a great way to keep the band's name out there while they develop new material. This disc features five tracks of material that mostly seems to have been previously released although, I do not have all the Numbskulls albums to be able to identify them individually. If you haven't heard of The Numbskulls yet, you are missing out on some of the best underground punk rock from the Northeast United States. The Numbskulls write some really great songs, and plays really fast, which is always good in my book, but the importance is the catchy tunes. This disc showcases that ability incredibly well, with "Best Intentions" and it's catchy, crunchy chorus that will have you bouncing in your seat, fist'a'pumpin'! The last track on the disc is another catchy track, "Misfit Blues", which sounds remarkably familiar and I cannot place where I have heard the melody before. Something tells me it's from something like Rocky Horror, but I cannot be for sure. I don't care where it comes from, what matters most is that the Numbskulls play it impeccably! I'm looking forward to the other volumes in this collection, I'm told a full length will follow the final volume of the set. I'm hoping that the Numbskulls will continue on with their catchy punk rock flavor on the new album, because that alone makes them one of the best underground punk bands that are still DIY. -MG
