The Messengers (released 2005)
Punk Core Records - www.punkcore.com
Imagine if you will a world of the Distillers and Tsunami Bomb... And fitting neatly right in the middle of the mix you will find The Messengers. As you can guess, the band is female front, thus the comparison, but this band is much more than that. The Messengers play a street punk with passion, authority and pathological fury. This is no more evidenced than on the second track, "It's Up To You", a crowd inspiring sonic blast that will have fists pumping and the pit swimming. From there things take off! The band kicks out pure punk aggression and excitement on "Between The Lies", "Fight The Rich" and "Buy Or Die", and the remaining nine tracks. I dunno if it's the band's mission to be socially aware, and to make you the same way, but it works and I'm not complaining. The best part about all of this...the band is from Cincinnati! That means Ohio...and this is nothing, nothing like the punk rock that everyone associates with the midwest! This is not cow punk! This is brazenly in your face street rock comparable with Swingin' Utters and Rancid. Fucking solid through and through, The Messengers don't mess around with pop gems, radio friendly rock or stank garage sounds...this is the real deal. Punk rock at it's absolute finest! The Messengers is a band that will cause quite a stir the next time you throw a house party, everyone will want a piece of what The Messengers are serving up! On a side note, I lived in Cincinnati about ten years ago. There was nothing like this then, and I can only imagine that the anal-retentiviness that existed in that town hasn't changed. It's probably a good thing, cause bands like The Messengers wouldn't exist if by chance Cincinnati had managed to turn it around. If you're looking for the true punk rock sound, look no further, cause The Messengers bring X, the Distillers, Swingin' Utters, Brassknuckle Boys and some audience participation lyrics together for your pleasure. Go get this album today, it's easily one of the Top 10 of 2005. -MG |
