The Genuine Imitations (released 2007)
Self Produced
The Genuine Imitations sound familiar to me... I'm not sure where or how... Maybe some kind of mix with The Psychonubs (who've got a new album arriving shortly), and a catchy, melodic pop punk band, whose name at this point in time is eluding me. The Genuine Imitations play a very garagey punk rock come indie rock, that borders tightly on success and failure. On the good side, the band offers catchy ditties that at first listen pulls you in and makes you want to find out what's next, while on the negative side it's almost as though the album is a little disjointed with swings of hip garage meets fuzzed out experimental. I guess on a few tracks I foudn that I was easily distracted, bringing about my conclusioin of disjointedness. All in all, the band does manage to proffer up some interesting tracks that more often than not feature a crunchy guitar riff, not really elaborate, but definitely effective given the simplicty of the tunes themselves. The disc features ten tracks of all over rock n roll, meets punk production and attitude, while showcasing a couple of manical minds. Fans of stripped down, garage punk rock will find The Genuine Imitations really entertaining. I find that I am caught on the pitch of the roof in regards to the band... I enjoy the DIY promo disc, the deshevled attitude and lack of a unionizing theme throughout the disc... But I really want some loud and aggressiveness from the band, something that it seems they are reluctant to show, save for two tracks on the entire album. Those tracks being the completely explosive and assultive blasts known as "At The Mall" and "Bombs In Space". Arguably the best tracks on the entire album. The Genuine Imitations are worth a spin, if only they'd stick with the explosive sounds of "At The Mall" and "Bombs In Space", and steer clear of the oddity of funky garage punk rock. -MG
