The Geeks, the Hitler Youth, The Orphans
Burned (released 2006)
Perth Punk - www.perthpunk.com
Well I think this album is really a dedication to The Geeks (possibly the first punk band in Austalia), with a bonus of the Hitler Youth and The Orphans thrown in to persuade you to purchase the album. However, after further reading of the liner notes it's clear that all of these bands are related and that there is a common thread through them all. All of which adds up to an interesting story, with many charaters almost reaching an incredible success, but ultimately providing a solid introduction of punk to the continent of Australia. I won't give too much detail away about the story, let's save that suprise for when you get a copy of the disc. Now on to the Geeks' portion of this disc features nine tracks of crusty old punk rock. Underground pub styled punk rock. Loud, distorted and recorded very badly, but maybe it was the technology, maybe it's the sound of the band. It's really hard to tell for sure, but I'll bet it's the true sound of the band. They seem to emulate Iggy Pop a lot, maybe that's the reason for the distortion and garagey sound of the album. In any case, the band offers up some catchy beats and driving guitars that would have fit in well in early-80s NYC punk scene. Finally for the Geeks, you get a healthy dose of their own music, but they also cover the Ramones' "Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World", Iggy Pop's "Loose" and the 60s classic "Louie, Louie". Moving on to the middle part of the disc, you get twelve tracks from the Hitler Youth, phase two of the Geeks history and co-founding member Ross Buncle's trip through life as punk rocker. The Hitler youth play a more aggressive punk rock than The Geeks. Where the Geeks sound was more intricate and layered, the Hitler Youth is chaotic and fast. The tracks featured from the Hitler Youth are of the same recording quality, which in this case makes them sound more along the lines of Sex Pistols demos. The same influences still exist with the Hitler Youth, well obviously since buncle is still involved with the band. There are similar covers of the Ramones in the Hitler Youth collection of songs, but with the availability of more tracks, one tends to think that the Hitler Youth were more prolific and successful than the Geeks, although from here it's hard to confirm. Wrapping up the disc are three live tracks from the Orphans, again an sibling of the previous two bands. The album showcases the evolution of Ross Buncle as an artist and of three of the earliest west coast Australian punk rock bands in which he was involved, an interesting trip that is succinctly summed up in twenty-four tracks that proves to be really good, even though the quality of the recordings seem a little dated. -MG
