Persistence Of Memory (released 2005)
Incas & Exitus Records - www.exploresound.com
The Editors have gotten back together in response to a compilation album, that was created to showcase bands from Connecticut, where the bands had a connection to punk rock over twenty years ago. The Editors played the showcase that was to help market the album, and since then, they have managed to squeek out a couple of albums worth of new material. On "Persistence Of Memory" the band actually opens the disc with what comes across as a bluesy, surf rock kind of sound. I was really taken aback! I had expected some really gritty, snotty sounds, seeing as though The Editors were based not too far from New York, a great scene for the first generation of punk. What you get instead is soaring rock, almost psychedelic rock! Only on the live tracks do you truely get a feeling of the band's connection to a punk rock vibe..they just let it all hang out and tear through their material. Singing out of step, whether intentional or not, adds a certain appeal to the album that the guitar solos that appear do not. Yeah, the guitar solos really set me off! While the album is great in that the band have some great tunes, and they really know how to work their instruments, the guitar solos stand out and make me think of surf rock, arena rock, or even creep rock. "Persistence Of Memory" is an album that are sure to bring back a few memories for those that were there, but for the rest of us, this album is a bit confusing... Is it punk or is it early alternative rock? Either way, it's interesting enough for a casual listen. -MG
