I'm So Bored With the USA (Sampler) (released 2007)
Not On Your Radio - www.notonyourradio.com
Again another single track CD for review...but this time, I'm not so upset. What we have here is the latest incarnation of The Devildolls Rock N Roll Street Gang, the UK/USA membered band based out of the UK. The band had formed after two bands merged in an attempt to form a more perfect union (OK, I added that part to the band's history). Seriously, the passing of the original lead singer, and ringleader of the merge, had the band in disarray. About three years passed and the band reformed with one member stepping up to take the lead position, and the band began recording again. Perhaps the bands biggest contributions come not only from their own music, but from the participation and support of the Joe Strummer Foundation. As I have found out the band's own original material sounds very similar to the Clash, as well as covering many of the same political subjects that the Clash covered. Sound righteous! The Strummer Foundation was looking to raise some cash, and The Devildolls Rock N Roll Street Gang have put out a couple of covers of Clash tunes on a limited release 7". This is one of the songs, the other being "Radio London". The limited edition 7", released on the band's own Not On Your Radio label, is potentially the first of several beneficial releases for the Foundation. The Devildolls Rock N Roll Street Gang are currently working on a full length album, due for release sometime in 2008, and one can only imagine that the Clash will be resurrected in some form with it's release. I for one look forward to it, as this cover is most excellent, and more importantly a bridge to the previous generation of punk that is tragically missing in today's punk rock world. Run out and look for The Devildolls Rock N Roll Street Gang's new release when available, and if your in the giving mood, stop by www.strummerville.com and make a donation to support independent musicians. -MG |
