Westward, Ho! (released 2007)
Asian Man Records - www.asianmanrecords.com
Indie rock artists Shinobu play a gritty stripped down rock n roll, that has seen the band receive as many favorable, as unfavorable reviews on this release (yeah, I read others reviews). I for one dig it. I think that the band is stepping outside of the typical indie rock vibe and presenting a new side of a popular underground genre. Their not really inventing something new, their just more in the shadows of indie rock. There are some punkier songs on "Westward, Ho!", but it is clear they are an indie rock band first and an underground punk band second. Perhaps the best example of punk can be found on the track "T-T-T-Trepanning" with it's vocals that remind me of the very first Nirvana album "Bleach", yeah not really a punk album, but certainly influenced by early punk and indie sounds. The song is a whopping minute and a half long, bouncing guitars and thoughtfully anarchic drum beats drives the track home. Of the tracks some deal with people ("Moms And Dads"), others with self aware required change ("Not Gonna Happen"), even death ("Hail, Hail The Executioner"), all in all it seems the band prefers an intrinsic view of self and how one fits within society. Again, I do like the album, that some wouldn't associate with punk, but I think it's really the ideas found within the music itself that I feel makes it punkier than other indie rock albums and bands throughout the scene. "Westward, Ho!" would appeal to any punker out there with an open mind to great music, and to those that are looking for something a little further underground than the popular modern indie rock landscape. -MG |
