This is good stuff, even though it is a little on the side of shoegazer rock. Several of the tracks on this twelve track disc are a bit slower, with some dramatic vocals steering iffy lyrics, but the band is indeed a slow moving indie band. I like the tracks where things pick up, while it's not punk, it cetainly fits into a pop punk vibe...kind of. I guess I'm trying to find a place to put this band, as I don't like the side of them that offer up that dreamy, lazy orchestral sound, but when the band tears through a track, I get all wound up and excited. I wished that the album would have been as fast and creative as the few tracks that featured that formula, it would have made me want to listen to it all the way through. But once I realized that there were faster track mixed into the slow ones, I skipped over until I reached what I needed. That may not have been the best way to review a disc, but it's the truth... The slow songs are disinteresting, and the faster paced tracks, to me, show the band to be at their finest. Again, it might not be punk rock, but it is solid rock that made me sit up and take notice. Lastly, and this really stamps teh band, they cover a Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You". The original was a drag, now have someone cover it and only speed it up by a half step...still pretty depressing. Altogether I suppose, I dig about half the tracks on here, with only a few being HSC worthy. A lot of big time industry smart people dig this band, and I see the allure, but I guess I like a more fast paced and exciting world, as opposed to one where things are dull, mundane, and slow. Run Run Run, should probably be renamed to "Walk, Jog, Run" based on the contents of this album. -MG |
