Hardcore anti-capitalism defines this Norwegian band. Rifu plays a hardcore that I wouldn't necessarily call hardcore. The guitars rip and tear, the vocals are shredded through the mic, but something about it sets it apart from my definition of hardcore music. Not sure what it is exactly... Maybe its that many Scandanavian bands, regardless of genre, have a similar sound. In any case, the band is staunchly against corporate control as evidenced on each and every track of the protest laden fourteen track album. What strikes me most is that Norway appears, from this American's point of view, to be a more free and open society than America; so why all the complaining? Maybe the American corporations the band often refers to, Levi and Coca Cola mainly, have infiltrated the Norwegian utopia and has disappointed the band on a very personal level. Not exactly sure how to take all of the bemoaning, nonetheless I think you can safely assume they are very jaded and want everyone to know it. Most of the tracks are anthems of information and require the listener to take it all in and make an informed decision of whether or not the complaints from the band are viable to their situation. I can see a lot of the problems brought about by large corporate raiders, but not all of them. This isn't the place for my personal political views, but I can say there are some places for agreement from what the band is spouting on about. Ultimately, the band reminds me a lot of Anti-Flag, both bands just lay out their adgenda of propaganda against the propaganda delivered by those with the wealth to have a louder voice. The disc is solid through and through with music that will certainly move both body and mind. While their lyrical contant might be Anti-Flag, the sound reminds me more of T(I)NC or Spanking The Monkey. -MG
