Pink Black, hailing from "the biggest little city in the world", or as Dave Attell once said, "the biggest little city with big city problems...in the world" ... That is Reno, Nevada. Not that I expect a lot from that city, although I shouldn't be too harsh, because I suppose music of all varieties can arise from just about anywhere. In any case, Pink Black plays a catchy, indie rock sound that reminds me very much of Zolof The Rock & Roll Destroyer. Maybe it's the female fronted vocals that are very haunting, but then again it could be the sickly sweet, sugar coated melodies that leave you bouncing around in your seat long after the track ends. In all likelihood, its a great combination of both main features, vocals and melodies. But now that I write that, isn't that every band's goal. A perfect melding of vocals and melody? Ok, that was not the best way to describe the album and the band. They play really great pop songs, that also remind me of Carousel Shy...intensely poppy and bubbly...feel good music. Several of the seven tracks on the disc are sad songs, or maybe not sad, just not happy songs, which is weird, because the whole of the disc has a real uplifting feeling. I think that Pink Black is onto something that will reap them great rewards, as it has done for both Zolof and Carousel Shy, but at the same time Pink Black can stand out on their own, with their variety of indie pop rock that is danacable and inspiring enough to keep a smile on your face and skip in your step. -MG |
