Rebel Scum (released 2006)
Self Produced
Not Quite Rebels return to us with "Rebel Scum", their follow up to their self produced debut album "Schoolyard Riot". Continuing in the same style they find most agreeable, pop punk meets young street rock, the fellas of Not Quite Rebels have offered you a tatse of what may be to come, or maybe they are just preparing for another stellar full length. The seven tracks on this EP are a little different from the band's previous effort, in that it is a little slower, more melodic and a lot better produced. The slower bit may be due to the badn exploring it's sound from all sides, I'm not one for the slow dirges that crop up in-between exciting choruses, but it does make for a soft sound that certainly wil ensure an audiance that ordinarily may not go for a harder, faster rock sound. The more melodic part of the disc is part and parcel of the band working their instruments to their full potential, individuals developing a better sense of what and where the sound should be directed, it's great that the guitars rip when it's their turn to lead, but again they fall to the side when it's time to slow things down. The production of the disc is fantastic, the sound is crisp, clear and the vocals don't get swamped by anything external to them. This fact alone allows you to feel as though you can sing right along with the band. Finally, the disc features two acoustic tracks, that are pretty good. I like the electronic versions of the tracks myself, but acoustic has it's lure too. I guess it's nice, cause you can really pick up on the intricacies of the band's ability to write a great pop song. Not Quite Rebels are making their way, the band is destined to accomplish some great things, with the appropriate guidance and production...it's only a matter of time, as they already have the talent to write and to make great sounds, appropriate for a wide audience. -MG |
