Degreaser (released 2005)

Cleveland's premier rockabilly trio remind me of a healthy mix of Reverend Horton Heat, Dick Dale and Brian Setzer. The band's thirteeth year of existence has produced "Degreaser", a thirteen track descent into the underbelly of Northern Ohio psychobilly. The disc is the fifth full-length album of solid mid-west guitar rock and roll that has but one job, to move your ass onto the dance floor. The band keeps things lively with firery tunes like "Legend Of 369", "4 Barrel Carb Dual Exhaust P.O.S." and a supreme cover of the Misfit's "Die Die My Darling". Occasionally, things slow down, while still maintaining a driving beat, like on the instrumental track "Funeral For Santo". You can really feal the Dick Dale and Ventures inspired surf rock in, not only the instrumentals, but in just about every track, including the Misfit cover. Some of the song writing seems a bit simple, but hey, its about the music and whether or not it moves you... The songs mainly tell stories, like on "Rock N Roll Bitch" which is about...well, you can figure it out; ""Get In Your Pants", I think this one is obvious too; and "$100 Hangover", perhaps my favorite song with bassist Sugar really sneering it up! I haven't anything bad to say here, I think seeing the band live would equate easily to a Rev show... Added bonus on the disc, the last track is a thirty minute radio serial program, that is hilarious, for apparently no reason. I listened to it three times! For those of you on the edge, Lords Of The Highway sound very energetic and aggressive enough even for the most hardcore of psychobilly fans out there. Don't miss 'em when they pass through your town, I think Sugar would whoop you with her bass if you did... Hell, the truckstop rockers that they appear to be, they'll probably run you over! -MG |
