Letters Post Mortem (released 2007)

Travelling bassist for hip-hop group Atmosphere, Brett Johnson composed the tracks for his debut album in-between touring. The result is a ten track rock record, sounding close to Foo Fighters, if slowed down quite a bit. Don't get me wrong, the album hits really well with a steady offering of rock and roll, less any punk influence. Many of the tracks remind me of Jimmy Eat World (the promo sheet says the same thing, must be a cosmic coincidence), however I just don't feel any indie punch to it, that's what really made Jimmy Eat World stand out to me. Kingfield on the other hand, really comes out as a rock band first and not much else following it. The album is full of bluesy rock n roll, again no punk or indie feel to it, it's almost as if this is a major label release that just failed to move any units. The production is that polished, the sound and feel of the disc makes it feel like strong modern rock, but again without any solid punch to make it stand out from the rest of the music out in the popular rock record bin. "Letters Post Mordem" is a nice introduction to Brett Johnson and his talent to write solid rock music, the album is just missing any attitude that would make is something incredibly special. -MG |
