Solecismi Pedestri Vs. Killdaddies (released 2007)
Tocado Records - www.tocado.com
How cool is the European scene? This cool: This split from two Italian punk outfits was produced and distributed by ten, yes ten, record labels located throughout Europe! The support for the music is incredible in Europe. If only there was this much love here in the States. If there is something like this locally, then it's news to me...I've never experienced it. The split disc opens with Solecismi Pedestri delivering their harder addictive punk rock sound in four tracks, that while I want to follow along, I cannot. The band performs entirely in Italian and I have no idea what they are saying. Even my old standby of Alta Vista's Babel Fish isn't making much sense of anything. What I can tell you is that the band plays great bouncy, punchy punk rock that is similar in style, musically, to an amped up MxPx. They've got a solid rhythm section, a singular vocal approach (until the chorus kicks in for the rest of the gang), and guitars that are cruchy and sporadic until the solo... I think it's really good stuff presented here, even though I haven't the faintest idea about what they are saying. I need to learn Italian I guess. The other four tracks on this disc belong to the Killdaddies, whom I became a fan of the first time I heard their self titled release on Tocado Records. On this split, the band still continues in their vein of upbeat and catchy punk rock, while not pop, it's also not quite a crusty street rock. The band does sound faster and edgier, a step in the right direction if you ask this humble reviewer. The good thing for me, the Killdaddies sing in English, so I know what's going on! Not that that should influence my review, but I'll admit...it does. It's nice to hear and understand what's going on. The Killdaddies really have upped the energy on these songs, which I'm not aware that you can get anywhere else in the band's catalog, so pick it up if you come across it. The three minute tracks from Solecismi Pedestri contrast Killdaddies minute and a half tracks well on this disc, it's a nice transition between the two bands, lending a nice range of operation from both side of the punk music found in Italy. You'll be happy that you got to get a taste of what's going on in the Italian scene. -MG |
