Hamsicle (released 2007)
Cut And Run
Hamsicle, from New York, play rock n roll, but with a seemingly comedic twist. I've been listening to this four track EP, trying to make sense of the lyrics, but the melodic beats, acoustic guitars, random shouting and mystifying chanting just overwhelms any effort to figure out what's going on. So instead of trying to tell you how funny the band might be, instead, I can offer a slant on their music. It is definitely rock, in fact it is very much a dark, heavy brooding rock. There are occasions within each track where the band slows things down for a bit, enough time for the vocals to come through clearly, and offer a glimpse into the mind of the band as a whole. However, the clarity isn't long lived, as Hamsicle picks the beat back up, along with the volume level to pounce on you just as you are getting into it. I think that this band is very similar to J Taft, Guaranteed Katch, and Dick Panther, less the sampling, but very much in the same vein of humor meets experimental rock music. Hamsicle plays their instruments very well, not to take anything away from their ability to craft a good song, but the album does have a feel of experimentation to it. As though the band is trying to be artsy and edgy at the same time, while maintaining a real rock band sound. It is a very interesting, and different, release; as they are very much a rock n roll type band, but they never allow themselves to break out of the shell of this slow, steady almost droning mindset. This album would be great to get stoned to I'm sure. -MG |
