Greenlawn Abbey (released 2004)

I'm not sure what I think about this album to be brutally honest. I like it, I do know that much... The twelve track album stands out as not the typical Diaphragm release, its too mellow and poppy? Greenlawn Abbey are along the lines of a good indie rock band and a good radio pop band, but with the attitude of a great garage band. I'm really struggling to put my finger on it, but there is something really amazing about the band and this album, but its escaping me. Could it be hypnotic? Have I gone under the band's control and been acclamated into their dancable, groove-laced indie pop rock? Most definately! At times though, I think the band sounds like Sub Pop's band The Thermals, but all cleaned up. The Thermals love their distortion, Greenlawn Abbey doesn't, but the vibe is still the same: upbeat, moderately tempoed, well-written and exceptionally incredible musicianship, that adds up to an altogether pleasurable experience. In the end, I am really at a loss for words, there is just something strangley comforting about this band and this their new album. Whatever Greenlawn Abbey are doing to my head...I know I like it, and I want more! -MG |
