A Whole New Ballgame (released 2007)
Self Produced
This album jumped out at me right away for the cover art alone...a couple of kids out on the dance floor pogoing and thrashing away, a girl in the back has the evilest look on her face as a guy is standing open legged in front of her twisting away. the shot has the girl's foot kicking right in-between the guys crotch, and the look on his face right as it's happening or just before in fucking priceless! You gotta see it! Hailing from Norway, Gravmar & Co. offer up to you eight tracks of garagey Norwegian punk rock, reminiscent of a Johnny Rotten fronted Buzzcocks, with a smattering of cursed laced dance tunes. The first track, and I love this, is pretty much an introduction to the band itself, titled "We Are A Grave Punk Band". The opener is catchy, yet rudimentary, but still the fact that their telling just how great they are is hilarious. I've said it a few times, I dig music that either makes me want to move or makes me smile...this track does both. It's got a classic punk rock feel to it, that really makes you wanna bounce around, but when listening closely, you pick up on lyrics about "chicks with dicks", "taking it in the ass", and "...revolution is the highway to hell"...classic! The band continues on with their questionable, according to other reviews, talent on "Holy Fuck," this song just has a great chorus to sing along to. The remained of the disc is full of some great titles and actually pretty great sounds like "Penalty Fuckin' With A Cactus (Is What Old People Deserve)", "Mensa", and "666 - The Number In My Fucking Ass" are incredibly funny whether they are meant to be or not. The band doesn't veer to far off course with their sound throughout the disc, it's always catchy, grungey and basic. The final track, apparently the band's calling card, "Welcome To Pussyland" differs slightly from the rest of the album, with is little bit of mellower sound, but still hilarity ensues with the lyrics that pretty much consists of the title be repeated 90% of the time. I really dig this album and it's irreverence and shock value. Although, it's not all that shocking, it's just off the beaten path of punk rock from around the world. Well worth a listen! -MG |
