Thumbscrews/Wicked Game Sampler (released 2006)

Well not a lot to work with on this review, but we here at Hussieskunk review everything and this short sampler disc will be no exception, dammit! Dogs of Winer play hard rock, at least based on the first track of this two song disc. They remind me of Live, from back in the day of post-grunge rock. The first track "Thumbscrews" is heavily laced with distorted bass and guitar licks, followed by a clear cut vocal lesson. You get a little of both from the band, a hard pounding, pulsing rock tune that allows one to rock out, while slowing down temporarily to pull in those listeners who are unsure if this is the 'right' rock for thier precious ears. On the second track the band tackles a great song, Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game". Now I don't want to sound sissified, but I like Chris Isaak. I learned to play guitar to many of his songs, and I'll tell you , the chicks dig that shit! Anyway, Dogs of Winter offer a darker version of the original with a heavier guitar sound, beefier bass lines and a not so smooth vocal delivery. The vocals are sneering, snarling, and basically drooling at the thought of ravaging the beauty that the song inspires. It's a great contray to the original song, the vocals carry the track, after all the melody and beat is more than well known, so the separation has to eminate from the vocals. The gravelly delivery makes the track an instant classic, topped off with the explosive version of the chorus, Dogs Of Winter make the track their own. So like I started off with, even if there are only two tracks on the disc, Hussieskunk will find the glory in them and deliver a review as worthy as the short disc. Dogs Of Winter offer up a ouple of tracks, that if indicative of a full-length album are certain to easily find success among fans of hard rock. -MG |
