Dirty Protest EP (released 2007)
Self Produced
Wow, this seven track EP is an accelerated romp through hardcore, speed punk rock! Blazing through all seven tracks in nine minutes, you know what you are in for...blistering fast punk rock shots in the arm. I love this stuff! I don't like slow dramatic songs...like what you'll get from today's modern rock artists and their current releases. Give me something that's gonna rip my face off and kick the guys ass next to me. Hailing from someplace in England, Dirty Protest have got some great upbeat beatdowns, that remind me a bit of Anal Cunt...although not nearly as crusty. Still crusty, but with hints of ska and I hate to say it, but pop. Yeah, it's in there....like Prego. Dirty Protest seem to be at their best when the guitars are cranked all the way up, the vocals are spitting all over the microphone and the drummers acts as though his arms were swinging at 2,000 RPM! You get that on the first six songs on this EP, the last track, strangely almost three minutes long, is the red head step child here. The last track is perhaps the most interesting, because of it's length. Titled "Dead Inside", the track starts out slow, then opens with a ska beat to it. The vocals come in and approach a rap, reggae feel. Then boom! fast paced rock n roll that is not what you heard on the first six tracks. Still a really great song, but why is it here...? It just doesn't seem to belong. I like it, don't get me wrong, but I also like the short bursts of aggression and take no prisoner approach to "Shot It", "Parasite" and the easy to remember chorused "Computer Says No". These three, my favorites on the disc, are old school skate punk sounding. I think you could make a great session out of this nine minute album. Just enough time for a solid drop in the bowl. Fans of Common Enemy will appreciate the aggession in most of these tracks, fans of ska-punk looking for more of an edge with like this, and fans of crunchy punk will think this is at the more domesticated side of the fence. I think it's a great release that shows all sides and influences of the band. Dig it for yourself! -MG
