Emo rock has this bad connotation to it among many in punk circles, I guess I'm an exception, because I don't mind it. In fact, there are many bands that play emo music that i like! We won't go into depth with those bands, but I want to point out that some bands get a raw deal by being placed in that often taunted genre. Deciding Tonight has been put in that catagory more than I have seen in other reviews, and I for one think they deserve better! It's true that their sound is poppy and catchy, but it still rocks! There are many choruses that have you singing along with the band, the lyrics are radio friendly and don't make much of a statement to change the world, but then again not all music does that. Most music is expressive and meant to reflect on personal experience, and that's what Deciding Tonight seem to do. That doesn't make the band emo! Deciding Tonight does back themselves into a corner, that puts them in the same musical catagory as some more popular Warped Tour bands...I'm thinking Emery mainly, but most of the poppy bands could fit. I find that Deciding Tonight play good ole fashioned pop punk and rock n roll that is just friendly, not emo. "The Delusionist" features eleven tracks of this feel good pop punk that I think many in the industry of punk rock feel is choking the real punk sound, and most of the time I agree. However, Decding Tonight is a stand out band that is sure to go far with their catchy songwriting, including the great sing-along lyrics, talented instrumentation and just plain pleasurable sound that they conspire to offer up. -MG |
