Chokeonnit (released 2007)

Loud and gritty. Mean and vicious. Dangerous and dominating. I think that ChokeOnit fits all of those. This five track, well six with the strange bonus, has vocalist Vanessa belting out lyrics about laziness, egotism, righteousness and more with the backdrop of metal tinged punk rock. Something long the lines of early 80s punk rock, reminds me of a female fronted Black Flag at times. You know, "back when punk was dangerous". According to the band's limited website, that's the point. Bringing rock and roll, especially a hardcore punk style, back down to reality and away from the commercial success it has recently been receiving. I can say they've achieved their goal on this demo release. The tracks are fuzzed out, under produced and distinctively distorted towards an effect that makes it feel like a contemporary release to all of the classics from the early hardcore era. The addition of vocalist Vanessa's shreiking, shouting and deformation of her larnyx, affords the album a distinct sound that brings to mind another female fronted act Tilt (RIP) and Retching Red. You could easily place vanessa's efforts up there with Cinder Block, lead vocalist, from the previously mentioned groups. This demo is great: the beats are solid, the guitars and bass are just loud enough to get all static'd up, but not so much to bury the vocals. For my money, this is a great interpretation and revival of classic punk rock n roll with a hardcore edge. Fans of early punk and 80s styled hardcore will really get into ChokeOnit's debut demo. -MG |
