Bull Lee - www.bulllee.com
M.T.A. (released 2004)
Self Produced
Starring a vocalist who has been all over the California music and modeling scenes, Bull Lee reminds me of two Hussieskunk favorites: Zolof The Rock N Roll Destroyer and Black Flamingo. Bull Lee plays upbeat, almost poppy punk rock that is very friendly, especially with the soft female vocals. The tunes are all really guitar heavy, it almost sounds as though the bass has a lead on many of the songs. That isn't a bad thing, because the bass lines are strong, fast and thoroughly grooving. But again, I think it's the personality of the vocals that drag you into this band. Rachael, the vocalist, dances through songs both speaking, chanting, singing and ranting. Her tone grabs you by the throat and pulls you into everything she going on about, you won't be able to escape her wrath...check her out on the ultra-catchy "You Gotta Go". I think she's singing her own back up vocals on there! All ten of the tracks on the disc are upbeat and dancable, kinda reminds me of some early NY punk bands. Bull Lee strikes me as something you might have heard or seen back in the good ole days of CBGBs. The sound is purposely raw and untamed, the vocals are there to tell you what's up (through singing or screaming Rachael will get the point across), added together it gives the band a solid upbeat, groovy vibe with this album. Even on unhappy tunes, like "Starfuck City" the album just makes you want to bounce around. Teriffic. Something you don't find very often, dancable punk rock! -MG |
