Regarding The Midwest: Sleeping (released 2004)

This band is really strange, and yet really interesting. The album is an EP with six songs from the band, which run about 3-1/2 minutes on average, but back to the strange part... The band opens and closes the disc with a bizzare instrumental, that when you have repeat on, track six fades back into track one. It makes the disc feel like it has no end, and that the best part is in the middle...tracks 2 through 5. Once you get past the slow opening track (and the closing one), you get a great dose of rock and fucking roll that at points reminds me of T(I)NC with a hearty injection of garage and emo. This is really great stuff when the band unloads and rocks out, but when they slow things down, they really slow them down. I'm not sure, in fact I am sure, that I hate the slow stuff from Ateriavia. However, Ateriavia has released perhaps one of the best albums from Lujo all year! This five piece is much better loud, fast and furiously passionate, something you will find in the rich and creamy center of this disc. Again, this is perhaps one of the best releases from Lujo in quite some time, and you wanna know something really interesting about the band? All of them, all five, are under the age of 20...two are 17! This much musical talent and imagination from teenagers, in my opinion, is simply amazing! For anyone who likes an eclectic mix of rock, garage, and emo...be sure to check Ateriavia out as soon as you can! -MG |
